What Is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD?

This is an term which includes the conditions of Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema. COPD is what it is shortened to and many refer to this as such.

  • Chronic means over time usually related to illness.
  • Bronchitis is inflammation of the airway of the lungs known as the bronchi
  • Emphysema is when the smaller airways and air sacs known as (alveoli) of the lungs are damaged

Southend & Basildon Hosiptal COPD Rehabilitation units can refer following your attendance at their in-house sessions for a wide variety of conditions, so please feel free to ask your Physiotherapist for further in- formation.


Is COPD Common?

COPD is quite common. About 3 million people have been diagnosed with it in the UK. These are only known cases as people make the mistake of having a cold or cough and mild breathlessness when diagnosed from by their doctor.

What is COPD?

Supported by the local Health Authority and backed by the British Lung Foundation (BLF). This is class designed to support those that are living with Chronic Ob- structive Pulmonary Disease or one of many other lung conditions.

A class where you work at your pace and rest when you need.

What Should I Wear?

We recommend training shoes and some comfortable unrestricted clothing like jogging bottoms or shorts and a T-Shirt also please bring a drink of water.

How Do I Join?

You can be referred by Basildon or Southend hospital using patient information sheet and once you have your referral sheet, make an appointment.
